When we first become Christians, there’s often a sense of excitement and optimism.
We may believe that choosing to follow Jesus means our lives will become easier, more peaceful, and free from difficulties.
But the truth is, the Bible paints a very different picture of the Christian walk.
Jesus Himself said, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first”, John 15:18.
He warned that just as He was persecuted, we too would face trials and opposition for living a godly life.
Becoming a Christian doesn’t remove hardship; in many ways, it puts a target on our backs.
Why Hardships Come Our Way
Living for Christ is a decision to swim against the current of the world.
It’s a call to holiness in a culture that often promotes sin.
Because of this, we may experience spiritual attacks, temptations, or even persecution.
The Bible tells us to be vigilant and alert, comparing our awareness to that of a watchman standing guard on a wall.
We must be on guard against the fiery darts of the enemy because they will come.
Hardships remind us that we are not immune to the brokenness of this fallen world.
Temptation and suffering are a reality for every human being, believer or not.
The difference for Christians is that we don’t face these challenges alone.
God’s Presence in Hardship
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4
This is the promise we cling to as believers: God walks with us in our darkest moments.
His presence gives us strength and endurance to face trials with faith instead of fear.
When life feels overwhelming, it’s comforting to know that we serve a God who sees us, hears us, and is with us.
He never leaves us or forsakes us. This truth is what enables us to persevere even when the world feels heavy.

Looking to Biblical Examples
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
The Apostle Paul is one of the greatest examples of enduring hardship for Christ.
He faced imprisonment, beatings, shipwrecks, and rejection, yet he remained faithful in spreading the gospel.
Whenever we feel like giving up, Paul’s life encourages us to keep going.
He understood that the temporary struggles of this life pale in comparison to the eternal glory awaiting us in Heaven.
Staying Focused on God
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33
Even though the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour, we are called to keep our eyes on the Kingdom of God.
When we prioritize God, everything else, even our struggles, takes its rightful place.
Hardship isn’t a sign that God has abandoned us.
In fact, it often shows that we’re walking closely with Him.
It strengthens our faith, refines our character, and deepens our dependence on God.

Practical Ways to Cope in Hard Seasons
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
Alongside prayer and Scripture, a few simple practices can help steady you in the middle of a hard season.
Take time to breathe. Breathe in, count to five. Breathe out, count to five. Repeat.
Practice grounding. Look around and say out loud what you see: tissues, boxes, glasses, pencils, whatever’s in front of you. It sounds strange if you’ve never done this, but acknowledging your reality and being present in the moment can help you find peace.
Say a prayer of thanksgiving. Finding any bit of gratitude, no matter how terrible things are, eases the weight of the burden. Even if you begin with the mundane, like clouds in the sky or toilet paper in the bathroom, there is something to be thankful for.
Encouragement for the Journey
If you’re in a season of hardship, take heart. You’re not alone.
Remember that God is with you, walking beside you every step of the way.
Lean into His Word, spend time in prayer, and seek encouragement from fellow believers.
And when you feel like you can’t go on, look to Jesus, who endured the ultimate suffering for the joy set before Him.
Hardships are a part of the Christian journey, but so is the overwhelming hope we have in Christ.
