What Does the Lord Require of Us? Biblical Truth Explained

We often ask God for blessings, guidance, and strength but have you ever paused to ask, “Lord, what do You require of me?”

Micah 6:8 gives us a clear, powerful answer that is just as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does Yahweh require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” – Micah 6:8 (LSB)

Let’s look at what this means, how it applies to our everyday lives, and how we can live in a way that honors God.

Understanding Micah 6:8 in Context

Micah spoke these words to God’s people during a time of corruption and idolatry.

They were offering sacrifices and going through the motions of worship but their hearts and actions didn’t reflect God’s ways. (Sound familiar?)

This verse gives three simple but life-changing instructions:

Justice – Living According to God’s Standard

Justice means aligning our lives with God’s truth and doing what is right in His eyes not just what feels fair to us.

“Learn to do good; seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.” – Isaiah 1:17

Justice calls us to stand for righteousness in our homes, workplaces, and communities.

It means refusing to compromise biblical values, even when it’s unpopular.

Mercy – Showing the Heart of Christ

Loving mercy means showing compassion, grace, and forgiveness to others, just as God has shown to us.

“Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, graciously forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has graciously forgiven you.” – Ephesians 4:32

Mercy is more than just a feeling; it’s an action. It’s helping the hurting, comforting the lonely, and forgiving even when it’s hard.

Humility – Walking Closely with God

To walk humbly with God is to acknowledge that He is Lord and we are completely dependent on Him. Pride pushes God away, but humility draws us near.

“God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6

Humility is not weakness; it’s strength under God’s control. It’s daily surrendering our will for His perfect plan.

Final Thoughts

Following Micah 6:8 isn’t about perfection, it’s about daily choosing to walk with God in love, humility, and obedience.

When we live this way, we not only please the Lord, but we also shine His light into a world that desperately needs it.

Prayer: Lord, help me to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You each day. Let my life reflect Your love and truth to everyone I meet.
