Let’s talk about something that’s part of everyday life, social media. Whether it’s Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, it’s easy to spend a lot of time scrolling.
But have you ever stopped and asked yourself… is it affecting your relationship with God?
This is something many of us struggle with, and you’re definitely not alone.
Why This Matters
Social media can be fun and helpful. It keeps us connected, inspired, and entertained. But it can also become a distraction without us even realizing it.
You might pick up your phone for a few minutes, and suddenly an hour is gone.
That time could have been spent praying, reading your Bible, or just being still with God.
That’s why it’s so important to be intentional with how we use it.
The Distraction Dilemma
Social media is designed to grab your attention, and it works really well.
The more time we spend scrolling, the easier it is to become distracted from God.
In Luke 10:41–42, Jesus gently reminds Martha that she was worried about many things, but only one thing truly mattered.
That’s a word for us too.
It’s easy to get caught up in news, trends, and drama online.
Before we know it, our minds are full, but our spirits feel empty. God is still there, but we’ve gotten too distracted to listen.
Comparing Ourselves to Others
Another struggle with social media is comparison.
We see people posting their best moments, perfect homes, vacations, achievements, and it can make us feel like we’re falling behind or not doing enough.
But Galatians 1:10 reminds us not to live for people’s approval, but for God.
Your worth is not found in likes, comments, or followers. It’s found in Christ.
You don’t have to measure up to anyone else,God already calls you enough.
Practical Ways to Stay Connected to God
Here are some simple ways to keep social media from taking over your time and attention:
- Set a daily time limit for social media and stick to it
- Ask yourself why you’re opening an app before you do
- Follow accounts that encourage your faith and uplift you
- Take a break from social media regularly (even just one day a week)
- Pray before you post anything online
Staying Grounded in God’s Word
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
In a world that’s always moving and scrolling, being still doesn’t come naturally, but it’s necessary.
Try starting your day with God before you check your phone. Even a few quiet minutes in prayer or reading Scripture can shift your whole day.
Let His Word fill your heart before the world fills your mind.
Encouragement in God’s Faithfulness
God sees you. He knows your struggles, even the quiet ones no one else notices.
Your value is not based on your online presence. You are loved deeply, just as you are.
Psalm 139:14 reminds us that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. That truth doesn’t change based on what you see online.
So when you feel distracted or overwhelmed, come back to Him. He’s always there, ready to give you peace.
A Gentle Challenge
Take a moment today and think about your habits.
Is social media helping you grow closer to God, or pulling you away?
Pray and ask God to guide you. Maybe it’s setting boundaries, spending more time in His Word, or simply being more mindful.
You don’t have to be perfect, just willing.
God will meet you right where you are.
