The Importance of Discernment | Learning to Make Godly Decisions

What is Discernment, and Why Does It Matter?

Discernment is more than just decision making.

It’s the skill of judging wisely, being able to see through situations and make choices that honor God and align with His will.

It’s how you avoid unhealthy relationships, steer clear of bad influences, and confidently follow God’s plans for your life.

The Bible talks a lot about discernment.

Proverbs 3:5-6Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Discernment is how you trust God instead of just going with what feels good in the moment. And trust me, it can save you from so much regret!

Step 1: Start with God

If you want discernment, the first step is to connect with the ultimate source of wisdom; God.

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.

How amazing is that? God wants to help you make wise choices!

Spend time in prayer and ask Him for guidance. When you’re reading the Bible, look for verses that speak to your situation.

Scripture is full of God’s wisdom, and the more you read, the more it shapes your thoughts and decisions.

The Bible isn’t just a book of rules, it’s a guide for living a life that pleases God and brings you peace.

Hebrews 5:14

Step 2: Pause Before You Act

How many times have you made a decision too quickly, only to regret it later?

Discernment requires slowing down. Before you make a choice, pause and ask yourself:

  • Does this line up with God’s Word?
  • Will this bring peace or confusion?
  • Who benefits from this decision?

Taking even a little time to reflect can make a huge difference. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is step away, pray, and let God guide your heart.

Quick decisions can feel satisfying in the moment, but wise decisions stand the test of time.

Step 3: Talk to Wise People

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Proverbs 15:22Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed.

Find people in your life who are spiritually mature, mentors, pastors, or trusted friends, and ask for their input.

They can give you a fresh perspective and point you toward God’s truth.

That said, even wise people aren’t perfect.

Always test their advice against what God says in His Word.

If something doesn’t sit right with you or contradicts scripture, it’s okay to seek more clarity.

Step 4: Practice Makes Progress

Discernment isn’t something you develop overnight. It’s like a muscle, you have to use it to strengthen it.

Start by practicing discernment in small decisions, like how to spend your time or respond to a situation.

Over time, you’ll find it easier to trust your instincts, especially when they’re rooted in God’s guidance.

Remember, mistakes are part of the process.

You might mess up along the way, but God’s grace is always there to help you learn and grow.

Don’t be discouraged, every step forward is progress.

Step 5: Keep Your Eyes on God

At the end of the day, discernment isn’t about being perfect, it’s about staying connected to God.

Matthew 6:33 reminds us, Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

When you focus on God and His plans, He will guide your decisions and help you discern what’s best.

Spend time with Him daily, whether through prayer, worship, or just sitting in quiet reflection.

The more you seek Him, the more clearly you’ll hear His voice.

Final Thoughts

Discernment is one of the most powerful tools you can have in life.

It helps you make wise decisions, avoid unnecessary heartache, and live with confidence in God’s plan for you.

Start by seeking wisdom from God, pausing to reflect, and surrounding yourself with wise people.

Keep practicing, and over time, you’ll see how discernment transforms your relationships, choices, and spiritual growth.
