Ways to Make Time For God

For many Christians in this busy world, it’s hard to find time to express our faith. We often feel like there is no time for God.

We resign our Christianity to an hour or two on Sundays and the rest of the week we go about living a secular life.

The purpose of this article is not to judge your choices, it is to give you some suggestions on how you can work God into your life if you feel like you have been neglecting Him. We have all been there from time to time.

Why We Should Make Time For God

  • Anytime you wake, with or without an alarm, who woke you up?
  • You breathe in and out, from who’s the breath you breathe?
  • At night on a clear day, you can see the moon and the stars. Who allowed you to look? Who placed the moon and stars in the sky?
  • If you had a minor illness, but you eventually got well, who made you well? Who healed you?
  • You stand up, sit down, and raise your leg up and down. Who did that?
  • You smile, cry, laugh, get angry, get excited. Who gave you the ability to express yourself?
  • In school, you take tests to get a passing grade or you fill out different applications in hopes of getting a job. Who provides those opportunities?
  • You drive your car to different places to take care of business or leisure. Who gives you the ability to drive and who provided the car?
  • You know how to count to 10 and some speak, write, and understand different languages. Who gives that ability?
  • In communicating, a person has many options to communicate with, every day more options will be for consumer usage. Who makes communication possible? We are able to create something from nothing because we were created in His image.  How can we deny that?

How To Make Time For God

Spend time with God

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually (1 Chronicles 16:11)

Tell God thanks, for the way you live your life. There are 24 hours in a day, we have to learn how to organize our time better.

I recently saw a quote that said we do not fit God in our schedules, we fit our schedules around God.  BAM!

We have to remember that we are just a mist that appears for just a little bit of time. One day you live, then you will eventually die.

What you do in this life is key.  Will Jesus say to you “I do not know you”?

“Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ (Matthew 25:11-12)

Life happens. The choices of your opportunities or lack thereof, matter. Set some time out to reflect, even on the little, unnoticed miracles of the day.

Set A Time To Pray Every Day

Make time for God

Dedicate some time each day to prayer. There are different ways that we can talk to God. It can be as simple as waking up in the morning and saying a “Thank you” prayer before you start your day.

Or we can literally go into our closet and lay on the floor for hours in His presence.  (That sounds good right about now!)

Even saying grace before meals counts. Just any opportunity you have to pray, do so, and know that you are connecting with God on a daily basis. He wants to fellowship with you!

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Use A Devotional

Studying the Bible can be overwhelming and you may not know where to begin.

Fortunately for you, there are so many different devotionals out there. Some are topical, just for women.  There are some that focus on one scripture a day.

I personally use “One Year Praying Through the Bible”.  My daily routine is, I wake up at 6 am, make my coffee and then open my devotional.

I have to warn you it’s not just one verse per day. You read chapters from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs.

It may sound like a lot but think of it like planting seeds everyday.  You will not regret it.

Declare A Fast

If you feel you are getting too far away from God, or there is something weighing heavily on your heart and soul, a fast is a good way to seek God’s voice.

First, pray over your decision to fast. If you feel it is what God has called you to do, then do it.

And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:16-18)

A fast is a good way to center your mind on the Lord.

Make Time For God With Other Believers

A good way to make God time is to set up a special time to gather with other believers to praise the Lord.  I’m referring to time outside of the “four walls”.

You can use that time to pray, share what you are thankful for, witness what God has done for you in your life, and even tell each other what you love about them.

“God time” allows you to get closer to God and each other.  It’s so important to surround yourself with people who are like minded.

Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near (Hebrews 10:25)

Honor God with the way you spend your time with others.

Join A Bible Study

Find a small group within your church that you can study the bible outside of the church setting.

It is really beneficial when you are in an intimate setting learning and discussing the word of God. There can be amazing transformations that take place.

Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. (1 Timothy 4:13)

Also, you get to develop relationships with people that are on the same journey as you.

Just ask your local church leader to connect you to a small group in your church. It’s a great way to extend your faith outside of the Sunday service.

Make time for God While You Volunteer

Yes, volunteering is a great way to commune with God.

Remember that Jesus said, “‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40)

So, when you help another person, you are communing with God. There are so many opportunities around us to volunteer our time to help others out.

Listen To Christian Music

You don’t have to wait until Sunday morning to sing your heart out to the Lord.  Put on some Christian music, close your eyes and sing praises.

Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power! (Psalm 98:1)

It’s also worth mentioning that singing Christian songs from Christian artists is great, but you can also sing a song from your heart.  Your own words with your own melody.  I’m sure it will be a sweet sound to His ear.

These are just a few of the many ways you can make time for God in your busy day. Of course, you can be creative and add to this list if you like.

You can do all or just some of these things. God loves you no matter what.

Remain blessed!

  1. I love spending time with God and it grows my faith in Him daily. Then I realize the more time I spent with God, the more my life changed. I became a better and happier person.

  2. Thank you for this excellent encouragement to spend time with God. I’m especially excited about your devotional because it has you reading whole chapters from the Bible instead of just a verse. I’ve been looking for another one like this to recommend to others who want one.
